Local SEO

Local SEO checklist for Montreal businesses (English and French)

Quick answer

To improve local SEO in Montreal, complete and verify your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, publish genuine service pages in both French and English, earn reviews honestly, and track calls and form submissions from local search so you can see which efforts produce leads.

How local rankings work

Google ranks local results on three broad factors: relevance (does your business match the search?), distance (how close are you to the searcher or the area named?) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed are you, online and off?). You cannot move your office, so the work focuses on relevance and prominence.

Use this checklist in order. The first three sections usually produce the fastest gains.

1. Google Business Profile

  • Verify the profile and make sure you — not a former employee or agency — are the primary owner.
  • Choose the most specific primary category ("Personal injury attorney", not "Lawyer"). Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
  • Service-area businesses: hide your address and list the areas you serve (Verdun, Le Sud-Ouest, Plateau-Mont-Royal, Laval, Longueuil…). Never use a virtual office or coworking address you do not staff.
  • Services and products: list each one with a short description — these feed relevance.
  • Description: there is one field. Write it French-first if most of your customers are francophone, with a short English sentence if you serve both.
  • Hours, including holiday hours (Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Canada Day, moving day on July 1 matters for many trades).
  • Real photos of your team, vehicles, storefront and work. Stock photos do little.
  • Website link with UTM tags so you can see profile traffic in GA4:

2. Consistent business details (NAP)

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere — same suite format, same phone, same legal or trade name. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines and AI assistants to trust which information is correct.

Priority listings for Montreal and Quebec businesses:

ListingWhy it matters
Google Business ProfileMap pack and Google Maps
Bing PlacesBing, and assistants that rely on Bing's index such as Copilot
Apple Business ConnectApple Maps and Siri on iPhone
Pages Jaunes / Yellow PagesLong-standing Canadian directory, strong in Quebec
YelpUsed by several map and assistant products
Industry directoriesBar association, RBQ licence lookup, professional orders, trade associations
Local chamber of commerceA relevant local link and a real membership signal

Start by fixing listings that already exist with wrong details before creating new ones.

3. Service pages in French and English

Your Google Business Profile needs a strong website behind it. For each core service, publish a dedicated page that explains what you do, who it is for, where you work, how pricing works and how to get started.

  • One service per page, not one page listing twenty services.
  • French and English versions on separate URLs, linked with reciprocal hreflang tags. Quebec's Charter of the French Language generally requires commercial website content to be available in French — confirm your obligations with a legal advisor.
  • Written, not machine-translated. Québécois buyers notice, and it hurts conversion.
  • LocalBusiness structured data on your contact or location page, with the same NAP as your profile.

4. Neighbourhood and area pages — carefully

Area pages can help, but only when each one has something genuinely local to say: projects completed in that area, local regulations, travel times, parking or access notes, testimonials from customers there. Swapping the city name into the same template creates doorway pages, which Google treats as spam.

Rule of thumb: if you cannot write 300 useful words that apply only to that area, do not create the page.

5. Reviews

  • Ask every satisfied customer, at a natural moment (job completed, file closed), with a direct review link.
  • Make it easy in both languages — one short message, one link.
  • Reply to every review within a few days, positive or negative, in the language the customer used.
  • Never buy, incentivize, gate or filter reviews. It violates platform policies and can lead to profile suspension.

Prominence grows when real local organizations mention you. Legitimate sources include chambers of commerce, business associations, suppliers and manufacturers you are certified with, local sponsorships, community events, and local media commentary. One relevant local link is worth more than dozens of generic directory links.

7. Track what matters

  • GA4 events for form submissions, click-to-call and email clicks, marked as key events.
  • Google Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Call tracking if phone calls are your main lead source — use a tracking number as the primary number only if it stays consistent everywhere.
  • Search Console: queries and pages driving local clicks.

Rankings are a useful signal, but leads are the result you are paying for.

Common mistakes

  • Keyword-stuffing the business name ("Joe's Plumbing Montreal Best Plumber") — it violates guidelines and risks suspension.
  • Two profiles for the same location, or a profile at a home address you also show publicly.
  • A website link to the homepage when a location or service page would convert better.
  • English-only pages for a mostly francophone market.
  • No tracking, so nobody knows whether the work is paying off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank in Montreal without a physical office?

Yes, as a service-area business with your address hidden, if you genuinely serve customers at their location. Never use a virtual or fake address — it risks suspension.

Do I need a French website in Quebec?

For most Quebec businesses, yes, both for customers searching in French and for language-law compliance.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile and listing fixes can show movement within weeks. Building prominence through reviews and local links is ongoing.

Should I create a page for every Montreal neighbourhood?

Only where you have genuinely local content. Thin, templated area pages can hurt more than help.

Does local SEO help with AI assistants?

Yes. Consistent details, reviews and clear service pages are also what assistants use to describe local businesses. See our AI search service.
