Approximate

Search engines may rewrite titles and descriptions. This shows how your tags could appear, not how they will.

How the guidance works
  • Width is measured in your browser using Arial at 20px (title) and 14px (description), similar to common desktop result styling.
  • Guide limits: about 600 px for titles and 920 px for descriptions (roughly two desktop lines). These are community-observed approximations, not published limits.
  • Text beyond the limit is cut with an ellipsis in the preview. Mobile results use different widths.
  • Character counts are shown because many tools use them, but pixel width is what determines truncation.
Why it matters

Titles and descriptions earn the click

Ranking gets you on the page; the title and description decide whether anyone clicks. A title that states the service and the benefit, and a description that answers “is this for me?”, tend to outperform keyword lists.

Google documents that it may generate title links and snippets from other page content — for example when a title is very long, stuffed with keywords or does not match the page. Writing accurate, specific tags makes rewrites less likely, but never impossible.

Writing tips

  • Lead with what the page is about; put the brand at the end.
  • One page, one primary topic — avoid listing every service.
  • Match the H1 and page content so the title is not replaced.
  • Write the description as a two-sentence pitch, including a reason to click.
  • Every indexable page should have a unique title and description.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal title length?

There is no official character limit. On desktop, titles wider than roughly 600 pixels are often truncated. Aim to keep the key information in the first 50–60 characters.

Why did Google show a different title?

Google may rewrite title links when the title tag is missing, repetitive, overly long or does not describe the page well. It can also use H1s, anchor text or other on-page text.

Does meta description length affect ranking?

Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor. It can influence whether people click.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Measurement runs in your browser. If you copy a preview link, the text is included in that link.
